Longueuil Celebrates Kerouac
Project description
From October 6 to 9 2011, 20 students in the Language Arts Programme, accompanied by three English teachers, will travel to Lowell Massachusetts to attend The 2011 Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Literary Festival. The theme of this year`s festival centers on the anticipated August, 2011 release of Kerouac's memoir/novel The Sea is My Brother, which is based on his experience in the United States Merchant Marine during the Second World War. Also featured in this year`s Fesitval is Michele Choiniere, a Franco-American song writer and singer based in Northern Vermont. Michele Choinière will be performing in a Club that is located just a few blocks from Jack`s birthplace and of which his parents were members.
During this trip, students will have the opportunity to partake in tours of historical Kerouac sites of Lowell, such as Tyngsboro State Park, featured in Kerouac`s Doctor Sax, as well as Pawtucketville and Centralville. They will also attend workshops, open mikes, poetry readings, a commemorative, book signings and conferences dedicated to Kerouac and to current American Bohemian literature.
